Alex Ruiz started his career as a 2D animator, working on a little known cartoon sitcom called "The Simpsons," and, although being an animator is a highly sought after career, he felt like he wanted to change but wasn't sure of where to go and what to do.On the side, he started to learn illustration and soon realised that he preferred creating still 2D images rather than moving ones. When you hear the term 'intelligent design' it is often in the context of religion, being used as a counter argument to Darwin's theory of natural selection. When I hear the term 'intelligent design', I think of one man's work. Keith Thompson's work.

If you are a fan of Discworld, you will surely have seen Paul Kidby’s work on the covers of Terry Pratchett’s novels. Often, a fan will say “that’s exactly how I pictured {insert character name here} in my head.” Bright, interesting and obviously brilliant, Kidby’s work has a classical, renaissance feel. This must be down to his love of the old masters of that time.

But, I think that is a shame because John Howe is more than just a Middle Earth Illustrator. 

In his books, John Howe reveals that he knows a great deal about ancient myths, dragons, lost civilizations and the fantasy genre as a whole. This is of course understating his knowledge greatly.
